Day Trip to Colchester Zoo

Me and my little sister, she 16 so not that little, found some vouchers on groupon to go to Colchester zoo, for £18.95?each with late night opening as well. We took the train up to Colchester, we booked a off peak day return ticket so that we had more freedom with our time. Getting into Colchester at 11.30ish meant that we had time to look around and get some lunch before heading to the zoo.

We decide that yates looked nice and not to expensive to try. Although the meals weren't badly priced the drinks brought the price up and we ended up spring around £18/19 here. £5.50 each for the fish and chips and £2.75 each for pint of coke and then a portion of onions rings. We had the fish and chips, there portions were very good as had 2 pieces of fish and a big portion of chips there were both very hot where as the peas were minimal and a little cold. My fish was alright but one of my sisters pieces tasted funny so we left that but as there was enough to fill us both up we didn't complain (maybe we should have..). The staff were friendly enough but wouldn't recommend going here, if we ever go to Colchester again we'll find somewhere that looks nicer.

We got to the zoo about 12.30 and it was a little busy with families and children, would recommend going on weekday when children are at school to make it a more peaceful experience. We knew it would be busy but it was the only day for the offer so we were prepared. We saw most of the animals without to much of a crowd, however feeding or shows where packed and we tried to avoid these as just to many people trying to fit into one small space just wasn't for us.

There were many walk through areas and one where you could feed the rainbow lorikeets.  Most of the birds were happy on their perches or the plants on the side, but one decided that I was a good place to sit and be fed. Really made me jump and I was very glad it didn't poop on me! But was an experience indeed.

The Giraffe was not being very photogenic so struggled to get a picture of them so this was the best I got.

We stopped off at an ice cream shop on our wanders around the zoo, this was a great stop for us as our feet were starting to ache and needed to kill some time whilst the Tigers were feeding. The guy who served us was friendly and we had two huge scoops of caramel and fudge ice cream to share. We sat next to the crocodile enclosure watching people walk past. I do enjoy a nice ice cream in good weather and this hit the spot.

We didn't rush around the zoo and took a couple of pit stops to break up the day. It was nice to visit this zoo as we had seen the television show about the zoo and how it was formed and the issues surrounding its opening. I also love how interactive zoos are and how educational they can be, Alongside the conservation work they do also.

The Photo of the ostriches makes me laugh as there were not happy with each other, shame the picture blurred as was very comical.

This is my favourite picture from the day as a yawning (not sure if that's what it was doing but looked like it) snake is not something you see often as usually they are very inactive every time I've seen them.

Love the effect they water had to create such beautiful photographs

After this we carried on around the zoo till we had looked around everywhere and saw all the animals, then decided that it was time to head home as our feet ached and my sister was getting tired. We bought a few souvenirs and my sister got some sweets that matched her hair.

On the way home I wanted a coffee so at the station went to the pumpkin kiosk and had a medium caramel latte and a chocolate muffin for the train home. The latte was nice but the muffin was a little dry, but tasted good dunked into my latte to moisten it up.

We could of stayed later but we got home while it was still light and meant we could catch a bus all the way home instead of having to get a taxi.
Over all a long but awesome day!

Keep Loving Food
Karen
