Sausage and Chips - Grosvenor Fish Bar

There are two fish and chip shops with an eat in restaurants within Norwich city centre... That I know of and three fish and chip stalls on the market (2 long standing ones and 1 newish one).

Now the market stalls are the cheapest options and there are 2 really good, long standing ones. One is Ron's and the other is Lucy's, personally I always go to Ron's as they do battered sausages and Lucy's has an un-battered one, but whenever I go to the market there is usually a queue for both. The other one is Chip and Dip and is relatively new and not as popular.

The two
restaurant style shops in the city centre are Orford Plaice and Grosvenor Fish Bar! Now I have tried both and I have to say Grosvenor's chips are much nicer and the atmosphere is better... however Orfords Plaice is more central being next to Debenhams while Grosvenor's is down the lanes which is a little further out. I haven't had a chance to compared their fish yet but their sausages are around the same quality but Grosvenor's has three sizes. These two establishments are pricier than the market stalls but still really good value.

Grosvenors Menu has items that you'll find in most chippys but they also have specials giving them a good range to go along side their chips including squid, tuna, mackerel and Shark nuggets! I really need to try more of these but I always end up fancying a sausage.

My regular chips and medium sausage came to £2.70 and was a brilliant sized portion, which made it worth the price, bearing in mind that I can get a tray of chips off the market for £1 and a sausage for 50p but they are smaller. If I had ordered a small sausage (same sort of size as the ones at the market) it would of only been 70p but I couldn't help but go for the medium for £1,.20, shown in the photograph. The large one was absolutely huge and I would have struggled to eat all of it!

Whenever I have visited the owner is always there which is really good to see, he is always chatting to the customers ensuring that the place runs as well as it is does! Think it is these little things that makes people feel welcome and want to return.

The shop itself has a nice decor and they have made good use of both doors to keep the flow of customers moving. There are a few seats available on the shop floor but they can get full pretty quickly. There is a down stairs area with extra seating, this is styled like a bunker, with corrugated tin lining the walls, sadly there are no windows but that the issue with being underground. If you don't want to eat downstairs as like a more open area, you can ask the staff to bring it over to the birdcage, a pub directly opposite which have plenty of seats. The pub have has a good range of drinks available and are very happy to have the fish and chip customers come across (they even have menus inside).

Or if it's sunny, I know a rare occasion in Britain, you can sit on the grass or benches just outside, there is even live music on occasions. I decided to sit inside by the window and watch the people going about their daily business as was a little chilly.

  1. We like all the chippies you mention in your blog. We also like The Chip Shop on Stafford Street, Norwich. Some good chip shops there.
